AeroScholars
Fundamentals of Aviation Science
If the
Young Eagles flight is one end of a youngster's aviation
journey, the AeroScholars program prepares them for its
continuation as a young adult. The only online aviation
course currently available for high school students, it
enables students to earn high school or college credits.
Few high schools offer aviation programs, said Dr. Lee
Siudzinski, EAA's vice president of education, but
through AeroScholars students receive an introduction to
aviation that shows them a number of opportunities they
may want to explore. "It's not intended to make all
young people pilots, but students who successfully
complete the Aviation Science Fundamentals and Advanced
Aviation Science courses are authorized to take the FAA
private pilot knowledge test.
Presented in English, any high school student in the world
can take the online courses. Students have 18 weeks to
complete the two courses, as well as 10 weeks for a
summer session. Registration for the fall 2004 semester
is being accepted through September 30,with students
needing to complete course work by January 30, 2005.More
than 100 students completed the course last semester on
a test basis, and Siudzinski anticipates that about
1,000 students will finish the online classes in the
first year.
Created in collaboration with Utah Valley State College,
AeroScholars is accessible 24/7,365 days a year. In
addition to the online content, web assistance is
available nine hours a day Monday through Friday. So if
a student has a question about the content, or is having
difficulty with the technology, help is available,
Siudzinski said. Enrollment includes an EAA student
membership, and the courses provide opportunities for
non-virtual experiences, such as taking a flight lesson,
visiting a weather station, or attending an EAA Chapter
meeting. (For more information, visit

All the additions to the EAA Young Eagles program mean that
youths will have more opportunities to learn about and
participate in aviation. And for children like Lucas
Benish, the timing couldn't be better. "I still like
making model airplanes out of Popsicle sticks or from
kits," he said. "But I'm ready to try something new."
