The Eagle Flight project is a non-profit organization dedicated to instilling the spirit of exploration through aviation to youth around the globe. Working through the Experimental Aircraft Association's Young Eagle program, the Eagle Flight will offer free flights to youth in more than 50 countries on |
6 continents during 2005,
2006 and 2007, including 49 of the 50 United States!
Over 400 youth between the ages of 8 and 17 will be offered free flights that include children coping with life threatening illnesses, Native American youth in North America and the Caribbean as well as children interested in aviation along his entire route of flight.
The Eagle Flight Project will be completed in three different phases.
Phase I began in Boise, Idaho on May 28, 2005 with an emphasis on North America. Eagle Flight pilot Jared Aicher flew a Cessna 172M, provided by West Mesa Aviation of Albuquerque, New Mexico, across the northern United States to Maine and then down the eastern seaboard to Florida. From Florida, the route continued west across the southern United States to the California coast and then north to Oregon, Washington and back to Boise, Idaho. More than 100 children received free flights in 41 of the lower 48 United States in only 33 days! Jared visited an average of three states per day during this time. Along with Jared during the Phase I tour were Eagle Flight crew members Stacey Commer and Kerry Widmer. Utah Valley State College, a major supporter of the Eagle Flight, also accompanied Jared in their Diamond Star aircraft promoting the EAA's Aeroscholars Program.
Phase II will begin on June 17, 2006 when Eagle Flight pilot Jared Aicher of Boise, Idaho embarks on his solo journey around the world, continuing the mission of the Eagle Flight on a global scale. During his first solo journey, Jared will head northeast from Boise, Idaho and circumnavigate the globe on and near the 60 degree north latitude. He will visit 25 different
countries on 4 continents including North America, Europe, Africa and Asia.
Phase III will begin during the winter of 2007. Jared will circumnavigate the globe for a second time via the North and South Poles. This circumnavigation route has only been flown a few times and is a far more difficult flight. His route will take him through Central America, the Galapagos Islands, South America, Antarctica, New Zealand, Australia, Asia, Europe and North America.
This website will allow you to follow all three Phases from beginning to the end with a photo journal that will be continuously updated during each Phase, a weather page that includes up-to-date meteorological conditions as well as current location, route maps, and upcoming events such as fund raisers and speaking engagements. Please check back often for the latest news on these historic flights!
